VLABS - an eLearning Platform

PALS is offering its Partner Institutes (PIs) an opportunity to build a “Virtual Lab Infrastructure” which would immensely benefit their students and faculty. This will be done by partnering with Virtual Labs – an initiative by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, under the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology to assist local colleges strengthen their virtual laboratory infrastructure and make their lab offerings more attractive. Virtual Lab collaborators are 12 leading institutions of the country including five IITs
As a part of this initiative PALS and NIT Karnataka, Suratkal (NITK), one of the Virtual Lab collaborators, would jointly work with the PALS Partner Institutes to facilitate the set up and/or upgrade of the PI’s Virtual Lab facilities. This would include:
- Training interested college faculty with Virtual Lab related general and discipline specific Faculty Development Programs. Certificates would be provided on completion of the FDP.
- Create internship opportunities for interested and willing students, through development activities for the VLABs.
- Facilitate colleges to use existing virtual lab facilities, and also create new virtual labs in different disciplines.
- Enable the interested faculty to become a part of an online “PALSVLAB Faculty Club” where information of common interest and benefit is shared and disseminated across PALS PIs.
The disciplines of Science and Engineering covered by PALS VLABS include:
- Electronics & Communications
- Computer Science & Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Biotechnology and Biomedical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Physical Sciences
- Chemical Engineering/Sciences
VLABS for conducting practical laboratory experiments on the same lines of NPTEL for classroom courses, aims at facilitating learning of engineering and sciences through experimentation in a virtual environment at the preferred pace, place and period (time) of the learner. These Virtual Labs would cater to students at the undergraduate level, post graduate level as well as to research scholars.
The labs have been created to arouse the curiosity of students to assimilate knowledge through experimentation. The process would consist of
- Giving experience to students and faculty for using existing virtual lab experiments.
- Enable creation of new virtual labs in the colleges
The membership to the PALS VLABS and other benefits listed above (especially #1 to #4) are provided exclusively to our Partner Institutes who have paid their PALS subscriptions for the academic year 2020-21. The PIs do not have any other financial obligations towards NITK or PALS for the PALS VLABS program. However, the PIs will have to provide for the VLAB related costs in their colleges, such as any additional infrastructure etc.
